Over at IGN they have a whole shitload of stuff about the “Reboot” of one of my all time favourite games.

Mechwarrior Rebooted!

One of the first games I ever played on a computer was Mechwarrior, that must have been almost 20 years ago on my first Mac, Mechwarrior 2 on the PowerPC 6500 Macs was a groundbreaking title in terms of graphics and multiplayer gaming. Since then I have bought and played every Mechwarrior and Extension Pack and Spinoff available.
Finally with the reboot of the franchise in the form of Mechwarrior “Rebooted” xbox360 gamers like me will be able to strap themselves into the cockpit of a 50 ton weapon of mass destruction and wreak havoc on friend and foe alike…

The IGN Exclusive interview with Jordan Weisman from Smith & Tinker (Developer) and Russ Bullock of Piranha Games (Publisher) is full of info and insights into the “reboot” of Mechwarrior – 6 pages long but well worth the read for fans and “newbs” alike…

Here are a few snippets from the Interview…

This new MechWarrior is set on the planet Deshler in the year 3015, and places players in the role of Adrian Khol, a wayward nobleman who prefers partying and shirking responsibility over his training and studies. However, when House Kurita launches a massive invasion to conquer Deshler, resulting in the death of his entire family, Khol discovers a purpose to fight for.

The Historical setting will be interesting for long time fans and that sounds like a character I can relate to…

…It’s definitely a re-launch. I mean, twenty five years of any soap opera, especially space opera, can become pretty difficult for new players to become involved in. We wanted to take the opportunity to re-launch, or as Russ phrased it, redact the universe. Introduce it at the kind of accessible level it was when we first introduced the universe twenty five years ago

Clever, introduce new players to a 25 year old gaming environment…

…with modern computing power, the developers are hoping to really capture the sense that you’re piloting a giant, walking war machine in the middle of an incredibly dynamic battlefield.

Lights Out. Volume Max. Immerse yourself…

Weisman and Bullock explained that they plan to have a full single-player campaign, as well as support for a four-player co-op campaign, and a full multiplayer suite.

In other words endless hours of destructive fun…

One of the key features is a sense of information warfare, using everything from unmanned drones surveying the battlefield from above to light scout mechs relaying information…

The tactical aspect of the skirmishes was always what appealed to me…

…reward you for picking a mech and sticking with it — you will gain experience and become better at piloting your chosen mech…

Class Based Experience Bonus Systems. This makes team based Multiplayer modes stronger, faster, better!

…a player could specialize in a light mech throughout the entire game if they choose. It also means there are multiple playthroughs with different mechs. The developers also said the game will change based on your chosen mech class.

Single Player Campaign replayability… lets hope for a Mission generator and mech “bots” to hone your Class Based Skills in different multiplayer modes.

…at least four. There’s the Jenner (light class), both the Warhammer and the Rifleman(heavy class), and an Atlas Prime, a feared assault-class mech.

Only Four Mechs named (so far) hopefully there will be more. I need my Timber Wolf, Uziel and Stormcrow! Mech Packs/Weapon Packs would make perfect DLC (Downloadable Content)…

So all that remains is to watch the video and follow some of the links I´ve collected for you at the End of this post. Although Mechwarrior “Reboot” is still in deepest development I will be adding it to the Countdown widget with an “Optimistically Wished For” release date before the end of 2010 – the next E3 should feature more about the Reboot of the “Best Mech Game Ever” so I´ll be adding that to the countdown widget as well.
